2012 AFC Divisional Round - 4th Quarter FG to win it! Pats beat Cincy, 41-38

"The Red Rifle," Cincinnati Quarterback Andy Dalton, 2nd-year man out of TCU, nearly gave his team the win over last year's Super Bowl champs in a stunning AFC Divisional playoff performance.

The Patriots didn't face the Ravens or the Steelers in this year's AFC Divisional Playoffs, but instead faced the Cincinnati Bengals. Although NE was able to limit Cedric on the ground to less than 150 yards rushing and less than 6 ypc (a stellar achievement for the well-worn defense), the Red Rifle was having his way with the Patriots' pass defense, hitting Green, Shipley, Gresham all over the place on all kinds of routes. Even former Patriot WR Ben Tate got revenge on his old ballclub, with over 100 yards receiving. By the end of the 3rd quarter, NE came back from a 21-31 halftime deficit to lead 38-30, hoping they could somehow preserve that lead and avoid overtime because unknown sources inside the team confirmed that they dreaded the thought of losing the coin flip and having the defense try to stop Cincy's surprisingly powerful offense. Cincy's defense absolutely shut down New England's running game, keeping them to less than 50 yards rushing for the entire game and giving up only 2.6 yards per attempt, forcing NE to be predictably one-dimensional with a passing attack. NE couldn't preserve the lead. After a few killed drives by both sides, The Red Rifle gets on fire and drives his team down into the redzone, and hits AJ Green in the back right corner of the endzone for Green's 2nd TD reception, and a clutch one because it tied the game in the 4th with only 1:06 left on the clock. Luckily, with good clock management, New England marched down the field from their own 22 with Brady, and by hitting TE Aaron Hernandez (who was cold going into this game and became the starter when "on fire" Offensive Playmaker TE Rob Gronkowski broke his collarbone in the second quarter) made an extremely clutch catch in traffic, catching the ball down the seam for a 20-yard completion to the 16 all the while getting slammed by Cincy's SS. The home crowd roared and went wild, in disbelief that he held on. Cue Patriots Kicker Stephen Gostowski. Bengals' Head Coach Marvin Lewis burned a timeout to try to ice Gostowksi, but it didn't work. He has ice water running through his veins! Clutch kick to win it, 41-38 (with only 16 seconds left on clock, a prevent defense stopped the Red Rifle's two miracle hail mary attempts).

Pats' QB Tom Brady was deemed "player of the game" by the media, but it's important not to forget that K Gostowksi sealed the deal for New England.

2012 Week 17 Recap - Mallett shines in start against Jets in season finale, rallys team for a 4th quarter comeback to win 42-38

As Patriots head coach J.M. decided in an unsual move (but similar to what he did for the final game of the 2011 season) to rest his starters for the Week 17 game where New England had already clinched the division and first round BYE), giving starts to otherwise backups QB Ryan Mallett, RB Stevan Ridley, WRs Julian Edleman, Laurent Robinson, and Taylor Price against the 5-10 Jets. Mallett performed even better than Brady did against the Jets in Week 15. Not only did Mallet throw for 5 TDs and only 1 INT, but he erased a 10 point deficit to New York from the end of the third quarter to stage a forth quarter comeback and snatched victory from the jaws of defeat, and the Patriots won 42-38 and finish the season at 14 and 2. It remains to be seen, however, if Mallett can be consistently clutch, or if this was just a fluke.

Additionally, on the negative side, the Patriots' starting defense continued to perform poorly, this time giving up over 200 yards rushing to Jets RB LaDanian Tomlinson and over 300 yards passing to QB Mark Sanchez. Experts predict that due to New England's continued struggles on defense, despite their first round bye, an early exit is a likely conclusion.

2012 Week 15 Recap - Patriots Defeat Cardinals 47-28, But Skelton lights up Pats defense

Cardinals backup QB John Skelton, starting in place of the injured QB Kevin Kolb, lit up the Patriots defense for over 250 yards passing, but Brady & Co. managed to prevail, 47-28. While it was a victory for New England, it has some questioning whether the defense is too shaky for the Pats to go far in the playoffs against much stronger opponents than Arizona.

Week 14 Recap - Patriots Resiliently Defeat Jets, 30-25, rise to 11-2

The Jets visited New England to revisit the intense AFC East division rivalry during Week 14. New York head coach Rex Ryan said his team would employ new schemes and defensive tactics in an effort to defeat the Patriots this time around (Eds. note: I reset the sliders to "out of the box" default All-Madden, but kept my house rules of no user catching, no switching on defense, etc.).

Scoring Summary

Patriots QB Tom Brady outshined Jets QB Mark Sanchez, as Brady threw 4 TDs, 3 INTs, and for over 400 yards, finishing with a 108.4 Passer Rating, compared to Sanchez's commendable yet lesser 91.0 rating, 268 yards, 1 TD and 0 INTs.

However, the player of the game was Patriots #1 WR, Wes Welker...

Further game stats:

After the game, Jets CB Antonio Cromartie, who is used to facing off against New England from his days as a San Diego Charger, and never at a loss for words when it comes to criticizing the Patriots and QB Tom Brady, had this to say after the loss: "I picked him off twice, and Kyle got him once, and we still lose the game? F*** Brady! How the hell he ends up with a better passer rating than Sanchez who threw zero picks, I have no idea. Messed up system. And don't get me started on their cupcake schedule. How do the Super Bowl champs get the NFC West on their schedule?! They should be facing the toughest divisions the following season, not the weakest ones."

2012 Week 13 - San Fran (6-5) loses at New England (9-2)

Despite having over 125 yards rushing, Niners RB Frank Gore couldn't bring his team to victory. "On Fire" 49ers starting QB Colin Kapernick cools off a bit as the Red and Gold lose to the Patriots, 38-15.

Highlights

2012 Week 12 Recap - Patriots Dominate Colts, 35-25, move to 9-2

Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning kept his ballclub in the game despite having one of his "off" nights, throwing 4 INTs to an exceptionally tenacious Patriot defense.Colts RB Joseph Addai finished with over 100 yards rushing, as did Patriots RB Shane Vereen, who saw more gametime than RB Danny Woodhead, and might be the new starter? The Colts' defense weren't slouches either, forcing a fumble early in the game and returning it for a touchdown. But the effort wasn't enough to net them a "W," and New England wins, 35-25. Colts drop to 8 & 3 while the Pats move up to 9-2.

Highlights

2012 Week 12 Preview - The "Regular Season Super Bowl," 8-2 Colts vs. 8-2 Patriots

The marquee match-up of Week 12 is the classic Patriots vs. Colts at New England game. Intensifying this red-hot rivalry even further this year is that the fact that the Manning-led Colts have the same regular season record thus far as the Brady-led Patriots, at 8-2. Who will emerge victorious from this battle?

2012 Week 9 - Patriots Defeat Buffalo, 36-24

In Week 9, New England continued its winning ways despite QB Tom Brady finishing the day with 4 INTs thanks to the Bills' opportunistic defense. The Patriots still prevailed thanks to strong defense and special teams plays.
On a kickoff return, WR/PR Laurent Robinson (free agent acquisition filling in for the departed WR Matthew Slater) returns his second kickoff for a touchdown for the year.

2012 Weeks 5 and 6 - Patriots outshoot Jags, handily beat Texans

Week 5
Jacksonville caused a stir when it drafted a QB in the first round, despite having 2011 Round 1 QB selection Blaine Gabbert still on its roster. Turned out, the competition was just what Gabbert needed. Gabbert set forth an impressive performance against the Patriots, well-utilizing his new talented rookie WRs. The effort wasn't enough to outlast the Patriots, however. New England wins an unexpected shootout, 50-30.

Week 6
Despite strong showings by TE Owen Daniels and veteran WR Kevin Walter, H-town again shows that it relies a bit too heavily on RB Arian Foster and WR Andre Johnson. New England adopts the same strategy it used against the Texans in last year's AFC Championship game, and the Pats roll, 49-27.

2012 Week 5 Preview - Patriots (4-1) at Jaguars (0-4)

The Patriots take on Jack Del Rio's winless Jacksonville squad in this Week 5 matchup. Will MJD run all over the Patriots? How will QB Blaine Gabbert fare against an injury-riddled Patriots secondary?

2012 Week 4 Recap - Jets, Not Patriots, Lead AFC East

This isn't last year. At this point this season (unlike at any point last season) the New York Jets, not the New England Patriots, sit atop the AFC East with a 4-0 record (versus New England's 4-1). Can Gang Green maintain the dominance?

10/19/11

2012 Week 3 and 4 - Dolphins stun Patriots in Foxboro, Pats bounce back (barely) in Nashville

Week 3
The dual-threat rookie QB Ben Reynolds shocked the Patriots by leading Miami to a huge upset over New England in Foxboro. The 'Fins also ran all over New England, featuring a quartet rushing attack with Reynolds, Daniel Thomas, rookie RB Jaleel Kirkwood, and Reggie Bush, and with Kirkwood, Bush, and Reynolds averaging over 5 yards per carry on several attempts. Dolphins win a shootout, 40-36.

Week 4
The Patriots win (barely) shootout against Hasselbeck's Titans
The Patriots overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Tennessee by a single touchdown in another extreme shootout, 48-41. Brady had to shatter the NFL passing yards in a single game record of 554 yards set by Norm Van Brocklin in 1951 and Warren Moon's 1990 record of 527 yards with no interceptions, but Hasselback was hot on his heels, nearly also breaking Moon's record. The Patriots now sit at 3 and 1 on the season.

(Eds. Note: My sliders are completely f*cked up. The CPU is overpowered. I will need to adjust them.)

2012 Week 3 Recap - The Resurgence of Carson Palmer(?)

Shortly after signing with Oakland, the previously missing-in-action Palmer led the Raiders in a stunning defeat of San Diego in their week 3 match-up. Will the Raiders surpass the Chargers in the quest for AFC West dominance? Can he lead the Black and Silver to the playoffs? The Patriots will face Raider nation later this season.

10/17/11

2012 Week 3 Preview - A Closer Look: Vikings QB Christian Ponder

Is Christian Ponder the "real deal"? Since being "christened" the starting QB for the Minnesota Vikings in 2012 over former starter Donovan McNabb, Christian has been lighting it up for the first two games of the season, with a passer rating greater than Brady, Roethlisberger, Rodgers, Cutler, Stafford, and Romo. He has the unique benefit of having the most talented RB in the league in his backfield, but has more passing yards than any of the top quarterbacks after Week 2 of the 2012 season except for Brady. Time will tell, but he's one to look out for.

2012 Week 2 - Patriots squeak past Chiefs, 36-30

The Week 2 - Kansas City vs. New England match-up didn't disappoint, as this clash of titans went down to the wire, with Matt Cassel marching his team just outside of the redzone with less than 20 seconds left in the game, down 30 to 36, couldn't connect with his receivers in the endzone against a Patriots' prevent defense. Here, Patriots WR Wes Welker (#83) catches the third touchdown pass thrown from QB Tom Brady (the other two went to RB Danny Woodhead and TE Rob Gronkowksi). Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles led all backs with total rushing yards (110) and yards per carry (5.1), Patriots WR Chad Ochocinco led all WRs in receptions and receiving yards, and Chiefs QB Matt Cassel actually outplayed his former teammate, finishing with a 104.9 passer rating (versus Brady's 100.5) and tied with Brady's TD-INT metric for the game (3-0). Also notable is that Patriot-turned-Chief RB Sammy Morris barely made an appearance, but Patriot-turned-Chief DE Ty Warren made his presence felt, sacking Brady twice.

2012 Week 2 Preview - Patriots (86 ovr) at Chiefs (86 ovr)

Week 2 Preview - Patriots at Chiefs
Brady takes on his former colleagues, QB Matt Cassel and (recently released) FB Sammy Morris, when the Patriots visit Arrowhead Stadium in Week 2 to take on the Chiefs. The Patriots will likely adopt a strategy similar to how they shut down the Browns, but will the Chiefs prove to be more resilient? How much will the loss of the Patriots' best defensive playmaker (SS Pat Chung) hurt them?

10/16/11

2012 Week 1 - Patriots (87 ovr) lose Chung, but Blowout Browns (83 ovr), 38-3

After throwing a comeback pass from just inside the red zone to TE Rob Gronkowski near the five yard line, Brady watches as "Gronk" swoops around and muscles his way past Browns' defenders to get his first of two receiving touchdowns. Gronk was also instrumental in throwing a key block to spring open RB Shane Vereen for a 83-yard TD run, and the media presented him with the "Adrian Peterson" award after the game.

Brady commented after the game that they expected the Browns to make adjustments to be more formidable than when the teams' met in the AFC Divisional Playoffs last year (sliders were lowered by -2 for HUM, and CPU received +2 boost), so the Patriots made every effort to play exceptionally well, but added that he expects teams to continue to adjust and knows as the Super Bowl champs that they have a bullseye on their back (sliders will be lowered again by -2 for HUM and raised again by +2 for CPU).
Patriots lose their "Defensive Playmaker" in SS Patrick Chung, who was injured with a broken tibia, and will be out for the season and placed on IR. Replacing him will be a rotation of recently signed free agent SS Ken Hamlin, and upstart UDFA SS Brendan Collins, who surprised many during the preseason with his exceptional play, but it remains to be seen if his fire streak can continue.

10/15/11

2012 Offseason - Statistical Attributes' Progressions

Notable statistical progressions (OVR):
TE Aaron Hernandez 91(+9)
RB Stevan Ridley 73(+6)
RB Shane Vereen 76(+7)
MLB Brandon Spikes 87(+8)
ROLB Jermaine Cunningham 82(+7)
CB Ras-I Dowling 81(+7)
QB Ryan Mallett 75(+6)

Coach JM's incorporation of tight ends in the passing game, a rotating, running back by committee approach to the ground game, and rotating linebackers and defensive backs on defense has helped all of the above-referenced players progress well. Also, his allowing rookie QB Ryan Mallett to play extensively during the preseason, during "garbage time" in blowouts, and for the full length of the 2011 Week 17 game has helped Ryan progress, although the activity has come with a price (backup QB Brian Hoyer has regressed).
